Colour trend alert: lavender

Posted on the 11/07/2023 by Karndean Designflooring

Restful and calming as a Feuille de Lavande candle by the bath, lavender is challenging blush to become the pretty neutral of summer 2023. A pastel sitting at the crossroads of blue and red, lavender will instantly transport you to the tranquility of aromatic lavender fields under a wide Mediterranean sky.

From the palest off-white and soft pastel shades to bold brights, lavender is a calming yet uplifting colour that will give your home oodles of understated sophistication. Choose a cool shade with strong blue hues for a space flooded with natural light or warm up a shady corner with a red based hue.

We look at five popular lavender shades and pick out some complementary flooring choices that will bring life and balance to your room.

Almost white

In a south facing space, a muted lilac with grey tones offers an unexpected neutral that’s highly versatile, appearing white on bright sunny days yet obviously lavender when the sun goes down. Blend cool lavender off-white with a mid-grey floor featuring a subtle purple undertone such as Frosted Birch then add interesting highlights with pops of bolder lavender and yellow.

Popping pastels

Introducing a touch of lavender to your neutral grey interior is the perfect way to bring your home bang up to date.

Choose a pure pastel shade with a hint of blue-grey then have fun with accessories in a mix of sorbet brights. Taking a pastel palette beyond children’s spaces, the natural earthy tones of a stone floor such as Bronze Castello Marble will ground these playful candyfloss shades with an undeniably grown-up sophistication.

Warm lavender

Tiptoe over to the warmer side of the colour wheel and you’ll find shades with hints of red that will suit a room with less natural light.

Pair with the rich chocolatey tones of an antique wood design flooring such as Winter Oak and accents in mustard yellow, lavender’s complementary colour, to create a look that’s as bold as it is contemporary with more than a touch of romance.

Keep it natural

Add more red tones and you reach the beautifully feminine shades of lilac, an often underrated colour that is oh-so-relaxing and perfect for bedrooms.

Recreate the serenity of a pink lavender field with a blend of soft lilac with sage green and warm natural wood for a space that will instantly soothe away your stresses. Choose a floor that’s packed with organic character and depth of colour like our Natural School Cedar for a timeless rustic feel.

Dark and sophisticated

Deep lavender is a great choice for a statement feature wall or a bold colour drenching effect.

For an elegant result, opt for a shade on the cooler side of the palette and balance this with warm neutral greige, highlights in dark regal purple and a cool grey floor such as Dove Grey Concrete with its worn fabric like finish. Finally add layers of softness with curtains, throws and rugs in tactile fabrics for a cosy vibe that will last all year.
