Thrive this winter with Nordic koselig

Posted on the 09/11/2022 by Karndean Designflooring

When the temperature outside starts falling and we see nature changing gear to a slower pace, we know it’s time for us too to think about cosying up for winter.

Winters in northern Europe can be brutal – dark, icy cold and oh so very long – but the Scandinavians have learnt how to thrive, not simply survive, through these darkest months. Taking lessons from them, in recent years we have embraced the idea of hygge which encompasses the contentment we get from quiet comfort and reconnecting with ourselves but this year a new trend has reached us from Norway: koselig.

What is koselig?

The concept of koselig includes all the physical comforts of hygge (woolly jumpers, tactile throws and cushions, soft candlelight and indulgent periods of calm) but adds an important social aspect. While hygge emphasises mindfulness and finding pleasure in taking time out, koselig recognises how important it is to share these quiet times with those we love and focuses on the happiness we find in our relationships. You could call it ‘hygge with friends'.

Fill your home with natural beauty

Now the leaves are falling in abundance, you might like to bring the calming colours of nature into your home, from rich reds and oranges to soft greens and purple heather. Whether you decide to fully embrace the season’s palette by painting your walls or just add a few accents with curtains, cushions or accessories, these warm autumnal tones will introduce a sense of peace and tranquillity and a restful vibe.

For best effect, add layers of soft warm blankets, rugs and throws then introduce cosy lighting with candles and table lamps. Switch off your devices for a day or so and swap the screen for uplifting music. Finally, plan a menu to include all your favourite comfort food and drinks and gather your favourite people around you.

Enjoy moments of joy

Where hygge advises us to pull a cosy armchair into a snug corner, perhaps under a window to make the most of what little daylight there is, koselig says bring two and invite a friend over for a chat over a hot drink and a slice of cake. Or clear the clutter from your dining table and host a dinner party or board games evening.

The Scandinavians also love to be outside for a mood boosting nature fix so koselig encourages us to go outdoors every day, whatever the weather. However, one thing you don’t want to be worrying about is muddy footprints so it’s reassuring to know that your Karndean floor is designed to effortlessly shrug off dirt and spills and is easy to keep hygienically clean. We’re off to put our wellies on. Would you like to join us?
