It’s official: everyone loves herringbone floors

Posted on the 18/07/2022 by Karndean Designflooring

As if we needed another reason to love herringbone, research has shown that this iconic flooring can even increase the value of your home! Herringbone flooring is one of the top trends for interiors on TikTok right now and we’re not at all surprised.

A herringbone floor is guaranteed to bring character and interest to any space, from living rooms and bedrooms to kitchens and bathrooms. Whether you’re looking for a traditional or contemporary style in either wood or stone design, with the comfort of vintage chic or the edginess of the latest trend, you can make this beautiful patterned floor your own.

Here are six herringbone designs that could be your new all-time favourite floor.

1.       Classic oak in the hallway

Hallways can be an awkward space to decorate but a floor with an interesting pattern will give you a welcoming hug as you walk in. Recreate a timeless period style with traditional 9” x 3” planks in a light oak design such as our Blond Oak with its gentle golden browns and intricate grain details. Add extra personality with a border pattern and your hallway will ooze elegance that can stand up to anything.

2.       Modern oak in the bathroom

For a contemporary take on the classic parquet style, opt for a modern 18” x 3” sized plank in a pale neutral wood design. From the subtle peachy hues of Savannah Oak to the cool grey tones of Glacier Oak, our Art Select collection offers a choice of oak designs that will bring the beauty of the natural world to life in your home. What’s more, with a waterproof surface that gives germs nowhere to hide, you can be confident that your herringbone floor will be super simple to keep hygienically clean.

3.       Slate in the kitchen

Stone floors have been a favourite in kitchens since the beginning of time but now a new interpretation is blending this classic option with our overwhelming love for herringbone. Our slate designs Fumo and its paler sibling Argento are available in both full sized and smaller 18x3” tiles, giving you endless options to play with patterns. Go wall to wall in herringbone or combine full sized tiles with a working area in herringbone, finished off with a matching border.

4.       Keep it quiet in the bedroom

If you want to keep noise levels to a minimum in upstairs rooms or have slightly uneven or drying floors, you can still have the herringbone floor of your dreams. Our Van Gogh range includes a number of herringbone designs in a rigid core format, from fresh cool Grey Brushed Oak and mid Warm Brushed Oak (pictured) to the rustic reclaimed look of Salvaged Barnwood. A pre-attached acoustic layer reduces the noise travelling through to the room below so you can relax in peace.

5.       Scale it up for open plan

In a larger open plan space, opting for full sized planks laid in herringbone pattern will add a distinctive character that gives a sense of flow without looking fussy. To get this look you can choose any of our full sized gluedown or loose lay designs, from the palest Washed Scandi Pine to the darkest Midnight Oak. For the very latest look, why not consider the extra-large 59" x 10" planks of our LooseLay Longboard.

6.       Bespoke design in the sitting room

Don’t just follow the trend, make up your own rules and go where your heart leads! Choose a blend of your favourite designs from one of our ranges and mix them up to create a truly unique floor. Whether you opt for a couple of similar designs for a soft complementary look or a mix of contrasting wood and stone designs for a bold statement, your home can reflect your individuality. You never know, you might start a new trend that others will want to copy!
