How to feel at home when renting

Posted on the 2023-07-20 by Karndean Designflooring

Magnolia walls and orange toned laminate flooring. The staples of the typical rental property are unlikely to be your dream décor but it doesn’t have to be this way!

With more people renting than ever before, it’s good to know that there’s no need to wait until you own your home to express your creativity. With just a few simple temporary fixes you can create a home that supports your wellbeing and better reflects your personality and lifestyle.

We look at how you can transform a dull rental into a comfortable home without sending your landlord into a spin. Often, landlords are happy for you to make minor alterations but the key to maintaining a good relationship and protecting your deposit is to check before making any changes.

1.     Add colour

Colour is a very personal thing so if your rental’s décor doesn’t appeal, ask for permission to paint in a colour that does. Your landlord may prefer you to stick to neutral shades so if bright colours make your soul sing, add these with accessories and artwork (using damage free picture hanging hooks).

2.     Temporary flooring

You may not be able to replace your rental’s flooring but did you know that we offer flooring formats that are installed without adhesive and so can be re-lifted and taken with you when you move? Our rigid core and loose lay floors offer you the freedom to make a change and keep your landlord happy.

With a familiar click clocking installation, our rigid core floors can be fitted over existing floors such as floorboards or tiles, while our Karndean LooseLay range features our K-Wave friction grip backing and is suitable for installation over smooth floors. As an added bonus, these floors come with superior acoustic benefits and so are perfect for reducing noise transmission to rooms below.

3.     Express yourself with furniture

A beautiful piece of furniture is guaranteed to give life to a dull space. Rather than investing in furniture that may not fit in your next home, why not head to your local charity shops or an online auction site where you can find vintage items with interesting shapes. Updated with paint, wallpaper or quirky handles, your second hand find can easily be transformed into stunning one-off centrepiece.

4.     Cosy up with layers

There’s nothing more homely than soft layers and natural textures so pile up your sofa or bed with cushions, keep a pile of warm throws in a large wicker basket, add a sense of opulence with full length curtains and fill your home with houseplants for the healing touch of nature.

5.     Get the lighting right

Your home may have just central ceiling pendants which give a harsh glare so introducing soft subtle lighting with lamps and candles will transform the feel of any room. Place a combination of standard and table lamps where they can provide both targeted task lighting and a warm ambient glow for a perfect chill out zone.
